Adobe VIP Marketplace: Mid-Term License Upgrades explained

Business requirements often change long before license renewals. To increase licensing flexibility, Adobe introduced mid-term upgrades in the Adobe VIP Marketplace for selected products. Some upgrade paths are already available, with more to follow throughout the coming months.

Summary

  • Adobe now allows mid-term license upgrades in Adobe VIP Marketplace
  • Selected upgrade paths only, based on predefined Adobe rules
  • Prorated pricing applies for the remaining subscription term
  • Renewal date remains unchanged
  • Organizations can activate higher-tier editions without waiting for renewal

Introducing mid-term upgrades

Adobe has updated its Adobe Value Incentive Plan Marketplace (VIP Marketplace) to support mid-term license upgrades for eligible products.
Previously, customers had to wait until the annual renewal anniversary to move from a lower-tier edition to a higher one.

With this change, qualifying customers can upgrade licenses during an active subscription term. Upgrades subscriptions maintain the original subscription anniversary date. For the remaining subscription term, pro rata pricing applies. That means customers pay only the price difference for the upgraded product, calculated for the remaining term of the subscription. This is subject to Adobe-defined eligibility and product rules.

Important considerations

Adobe defines mid-term upgrades using predefined, directional upgrade paths.
As a result, not every product can be upgraded, and not every upgrade combination is supported.

  • Upgrade paths are predefined and must be validated per product and subscription
  • Upgrades are one-directional from a lower tier to a higher tier
  • Depending on the path:
    • Full upgrade: all licenses must be upgraded
    • Partial upgrade: only a subset of licenses can be upgraded
  • After a full upgrade, only the new product renews
  • After a partial upgrade, both the original and upgraded products renew
  • In all cases, the subscription anniversary date remains unchanged
  • Automatic user reassignment is not supported for upgrades from Teams to Enterprise. That means, the admin manually assigns the license to a user in the admin console, after the upgrade is made.
  • Certain items, such as Stock Credit Packs and Adobe Sign, are not eligible for mid-term upgrades
  • Complex upgrades, such as combining multiple single apps into larger bundles, are not supported

Examples of confirmed upgrade paths

Adobe confirms that mid-term upgrades are supported only for predefined, product-specific paths.
The following upgrade paths are explicitly named in Adobe’s official VIP Marketplace mid-term upgrade documentation and can therefore be treated as high-confidence examples:

Confirmed examples:

  • Creative Cloud Pro for teams → Creative Cloud All Apps – Edition 4 for enterprise; or: Creative Cloud Pro Plus for teams

  • Acrobat Pro for Teams → Acrobat Studio for Teams
  • Acrobat Studio for Teams → Acrobat Studio for Enterprise
  • Acrobat Standard for Teams → Acrobat Standard for Enterprise
    • This path is documented as a full upgrade, meaning all seats must be upgraded

Adobe uses these examples to illustrate the general upgrade pattern:

  • From Teams editions to Enterprise editions
  • From lower-tier to higher-tier editions within the same product family

The upgrade path you are looking for is not listed? Ask us to confirm if your intended upgrade path is available.

In the future, it is expected that upgrading multiple products into different products will also become possible, including the ability to apply promotional offers to such upgrades. For example, the possibility of upgrading from Acrobat Standard to Acrobat Studio mid-term is expected to be released at the end of 2026.
