Atlassian Data Center End of Life

March 28, 2029, is the final End of Life (EOL) date for Atlassian Data Center products. On that day, support will end, and all Atlassian Data Center instances will become read-only (no new data can be added). Atlassian is phasing out these self-hosted products over a three-year period to help customers transition to the cloud.

Key dates in this timeline include:

  • March 30, 2026End of new sales for Data Center. After this date, Atlassian will no longer sell new Data Center subscriptions to customers who are not already using Data Center.
  • March 30, 2028End of renewals and upgrades. Existing Data Center customers can continue to renew subscriptions or increase user counts until this date. After March 30, 2028, no further subscription renewals or expansions will be possible.
  • March 28, 2029Complete end-of-life. All Data Center product licenses will expire on this date. The software will remain accessible in a read-only state, but official support, updates, and new content creation will cease.

During this phase-out period, Atlassian will continue to provide technical support and critical security fixes for Data Center products up until the final EOL in 2029. This phased approach gives organizations time (from early 2026 to early 2029) to plan and execute their migration from Data Center to Atlassian’s cloud services or other alternatives before support ends.

What is Atlassian Data Center

Atlassian Data Center is the enterprise, self-managed edition of Atlassian’s software products. Instead of using Atlassian’s cloud platform, companies with Data Center licenses run these applications on their own servers or cloud infrastructure. This provides more control over data, customization, and integration with existing IT systems.

The end of life applies to affected Data Center products and Marketplace apps, which include:

  • Jira Software Data Center
  • Jira Service Management Data Center
  • Confluence Data Center
  • Bamboo Data Center
  • Crowd Data Center
  • Data Center mobile apps
  • Atlassian Data Center apps
  • Atlassian Marketplace (third-party) apps for affected Data Center products

In summary, Atlassian Data Center was designed for large organizations that needed Atlassian software to be highly available and under their direct control (often for compliance or performance reasons). It has been sold as a subscription (per user, annually) that customers install and manage themselves.

Key Features

Atlassian Data Center products offer advanced capabilities tailored for enterprise environments:

  • High Availability (Clustering): You can deploy multiple active server nodes in a cluster. If one node fails, others keep the application running, ensuring minimal downtime. Clustering also helps distribute load for better performance under heavy use.
  • Scalability: Data Center allows horizontal scaling by adding more nodes to handle increasing users or data. This means an instance can grow with your organization’s needs without a drop in performance.
  • Enterprise Security Integration: The platform supports corporate security requirements. For example, Single Sign-On (SSO) via SAML/OAuth is built-in, so users can log in with company credentials. Data Center can also integrate with external user directories (like Active Directory/LDAP) for centralized user management. These features ensure compliance with enterprise security policies.
  • Advanced Administration: Administrators have more control, such as the ability to put the system in read-only mode for maintenance, perform zero-downtime upgrades (updating one node at a time), and review detailed audit logs. This makes it easier to maintain stability and plan updates in complex setups.

These features made Atlassian Data Center suitable for mission-critical deployments where uptime, performance, and data control are paramount.

Licensing

Atlassian Data Center uses a subscription-based licensing model. Here are the important licensing changes due to the EOL schedule:

  • After March 30, 2026, Atlassian will stop selling new Data Center licenses. This means if your organization is not already a Data Center customer by that date, you won’t be able to start a new Data Center subscription afterward.
  • If you are an existing Data Center customer, you can continue to renew your license and purchase additional user seats (or new Data Center products) until March 30, 2028. After that date, no further renewals or expansions will be allowed, even for existing customers. Your license at that point can only remain active until it naturally expires on the final EOL date.
  • On March 28, 2029, all Data Center licenses will expire. The products reach end-of-life, meaning you will no longer receive support or updates. Your Data Center applications will effectively be frozen in a read-only state beyond this point.

Plan ahead: Given this timeline, organizations should start preparing to migrate to Atlassian Cloud or another solution well before 2029. Evaluate how much time you need for testing and migrating data. Remember that Atlassian is actively enhancing their cloud offerings to support enterprise needs, and they provide migration tools (like the Cloud Migration Assistants) to help transfer projects, spaces, and repositories. It’s wise to review Atlassian’s migration incentives or trial programs, which could ease the transition cost and effort.
