With this, <strong>major VMware licensing changes<\/strong> were made. VMware has <strong>reduced the number of offerings<\/strong> and has <strong>transitioned<\/strong> their bundles <strong>to<\/strong> <strong>subscriptions<\/strong>. The catalog of <strong>160+ VMware<\/strong> products and bundles has been <strong>consolidated into<\/strong> just a <strong>few main bundles<\/strong>. Also, in November 2024,<strong> vSphere Essentials Plus was replaced by vSphere Enterprise Plus<\/strong> (a new and different product). In this article, we want to give you an <strong>overview<\/strong> of the <strong>new licensing models<\/strong> of VMware. Customers must promptly renew their subscription to avoid a late renewal fee.<\/p>\n<h3>VMware has moved to subscriptions \u2013 do they require constant Internet connectivity?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>No, the new subscriptions can run in offline (disconnected) environments<\/strong>. Broadcom terms these \u201cdisconnected\u201d licenses, meaning no cloud activation check is required as long as your subscription is valid. In the future, some connectivity features might be introduced for convenience (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schneider.im\/lu\/how-vcf-9-0-and-microsoft-azure-work-together-hybrid-cloud-done-right\/\">VCF 9<\/a>.0\u2019s connected mode allows one-click license usage reporting), but customers can continue operating in air-gapped mode if needed. For compliance, VMware provides a method to periodically share offline usage reports (e.g. every 180 days) if you have no internet connectivity. Mixing perpetual and subscription licenses on the same systems is supported only if they remain in separate \u201cdisconnected\u201d clusters<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">How will hosted IT services for <strong>non<\/strong>-&#8220;<strong>affiliated<\/strong>&#8221; <strong>companies<\/strong> be regulated in the future?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regulations for these services remain unchanged and are governed by the General Terms, Software Exhibits, and Product Guide.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regarding subsequent purchases: Can the <strong>rental<\/strong> <strong>licenses<\/strong> that may be purchased later and the <strong>perpetual<\/strong> <strong>licenses<\/strong> already available in the Enterprise Licensing Agreement (ELA) be used in <strong>parallel<\/strong> in the mix?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A mix of perpetual and subscription licenses is only possible in the vSphere area counted on a host-based basis. For vSAN, a mix of subscription and perpetual licenses is not possible.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Can I mix existing perpetual licenses with new subscription licenses in one environment?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Mixing is limited and mostly <em>not<\/em> recommended.<\/strong> You <em>can<\/em> run perpetual-licensed vSphere hosts alongside subscription-licensed hosts <strong>only if they are managed separately<\/strong> (for example, in separate clusters or vCenters, with no dependency). <strong>Within a single cluster or vCenter<\/strong>, having a mix of license types can be problematic or impossible. Specifically: for <strong>vSphere<\/strong> itself, it\u2019s technically possible to have some hosts on perpetual and some on subscription, but all hosts participating in features like vMotion or HA clusters generally need a common licensing basis. For <strong>vSAN<\/strong>, mixing perpetual and subscription <strong>on the same cluster is not allowed<\/strong> at all \u2013 you would need to transition the entire vSAN cluster to subscription. In summary, it\u2019s best to plan a full migration of a given environment to subscription licenses. During a phased upgrade, keep old and new licenses isolated to avoid compliance issues.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Can VMware Cloud Foundation (<strong>VCF<\/strong>) and vSphere Foundation (<strong>VVF<\/strong>) be <strong>mixed<\/strong>? What about global deployment rights?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Yes, but with caution.<\/strong> Technically, you could license some clusters with VCF and others with VVF under the same management, but <strong>within a single VMware Enterprise Agreement (VEO\/ELA)<\/strong> it\u2019s generally not allowed to mix them freely. VCF is intended as an all-in-one stack \u2013 if you have a VCF deployment, adding separate VVF-licensed clusters may complicate support or violate the bundle terms. Outside of an enterprise agreement, mixing is possible (for example, a company might use VCF in one data center and VVF in another). <strong>Global deployment rights<\/strong> (using licenses across regions or affiliates) will depend on your specific contract terms (General Terms and Product Guide) and may need negotiation for exceptions. Always verify with VMware\/Broadcom if your use case involves combining different bundles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To summarize: Outside of a VMware Enterprise Order (VEO) \/ Enterprise Licensing Agreement (ELA), mixing VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) and vSphere Foundation (VVF) is possible. However, within a VEO, mix-and-match is not typically allowed.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What are the <strong>storage<\/strong> <strong>expansion<\/strong> options for VVF per Core 250GB vSAN storage?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The vSAN add-on can be used to expand storage, but licensing starts from scratch rather than just adding capacity.<\/p>\n<p>VMware now licenses vSAN capacity on a <strong>per-TiB basis<\/strong> via an add-on subscription. If, for example, you have vSphere Foundation which includes 250\u00a0GiB per core and you need more, you must purchase a <strong>vSAN add-on<\/strong> subscription for the additional capacity. Notably, the vSAN add-on is <strong>licensed starting from 0<\/strong> for the extra capacity \u2013 you can\u2019t just purchase the \u201cdelta\u201d above the included amount. In other words, to expand storage, you\u2019d procure a vSAN subscription covering the total additional TiBs required. (For <strong>VCF<\/strong>, 1\u00a0TiB\/core is included; any extra beyond that also uses the vSAN add-on.) This add-on approach applies only to vSAN storage \u2013 other add-ons cover different needs like backup (VMware Live Recovery) or security (vDefend firewall).<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Is there anything known about the planned <strong>conversion<\/strong> of <strong>existing<\/strong> <strong>VMware Hybrid Purchasing Program (HPP) credits<\/strong> into subscription credits as part of a VMware ELA?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Details about the conversion from HPP credits to other credits are not yet available.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What happens to <strong>existing<\/strong> <strong>support<\/strong> <strong>contracts<\/strong> that were renewed for 2 years last year?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Existing support and subscription (SnS) contracts on perpetual licenses remain valid until their term ends.<\/strong> If you, for example, renewed support on vSphere 7 or 8 for two years in 2023, you will continue to receive support and updates for that period. Broadcom has honored existing support terms for legacy licenses. When those contracts approach expiration, you\u2019ll likely need to move to the new subscription model (or renew via a subscription conversion). There are also <strong>extension options<\/strong> \u2013 VMware may allow extending support on certain perpetual products a bit longer, but generally the plan is to have customers transition to subscriptions at contract end. Always check the latest Product Lifecycle Matrix; core vSphere 7 support, for instance, ends by October 2025.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Can you provide <strong>pricing<\/strong> <strong>information<\/strong> for licensed editions? Where can I send <strong>price<\/strong> <strong>requests<\/strong>?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Pricing is obtained via VMware\/Broadcom partners or representatives.<\/strong> VMware no longer publishes price lists publicly for these enterprise subscriptions. To get a quote, you should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schneider.im\/contact\/\">contact us (SCHNEIDER IT MANAGEMENT)<\/a> or your VMware reseller. We can provide pricing for 1-year vs <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schneider.im\/lu\/microsoft-365-e3-e5-teams-enterprise-3-year-term-subscriptions-available-in-csp\/\">3-year<\/a> vs 5-year subscription options, and discuss any applicable discounts. In general, prices went up drastically, and Broadcom wants to push higher-tiered subscriptions, while giving discounts. However, deals are often individualized. <strong>Volume and commitment discounts<\/strong> may be negotiated, especially if you transition a large environment to subscription.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Are there still offers\/<strong>discounts<\/strong> when handing over the perpetual licenses?<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Yes<\/strong>, in many cases Broadcom\/VMware are offering promotions or negotiated discounts for customers trading in perpetual licenses. There isn\u2019t a universal public program, but account representatives can often provide custom transition discounts. For instance, some customers trading up to subscriptions have received credit for the remaining value of their perpetual support. Broadcom has also signaled a formal trade-in program is in the works, but details are still pending. The key is to negotiate individually \u2013 if you have sizable perpetual investments, work with your vendor (or us as your licensing partner) to get the best possible deal on the new subscriptions.<\/p>\n<h3>What exactly is license portability in VMware Cloud Foundation?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>License Portability<\/strong> is a new benefit Broadcom introduced that lets you <strong>move your VMware Cloud Foundation subscriptions to supported clouds or service providers<\/strong> without buying new licenses. Essentially, a customer can use the <strong>same VCF licenses on-premises or \u201cport\u201d them to a public cloud<\/strong> (like running VCF on a hyperscaler) as their needs change. For example, Broadcom announced Google Cloud as the first supported hyperscaler for VCF license portability. This means you could deploy VMware Cloud Foundation on Google Cloud using your on-prem subscription entitlements. In the coming year, more clouds and VMware Cloud Provider partners will allow this. Portability gives flexibility to shift workloads to cloud while <strong>avoiding double licensing<\/strong>.
