It\u00a0<strong>continuously evaluates the last access time<\/strong>\u00a0of each object on a smart tier-enabled storage account and moves the object to the\u00a0<strong>most cost-effective capacity tier<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Once enabled, Azure\u00a0<strong>evaluates each object&#8217;s last access time<\/strong>\u00a0and automatically transitions data between three\u00a0<strong>capacity tiers<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hot<\/strong>: for\u00a0<strong>frequently accessed data<\/strong>. This is the fastest and most expensive to store and the cheapest to read.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cool<\/strong>: for\u00a0<strong>data accessed only occasionally<\/strong>. This is cheaper to store and slightly more expensive to read.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cold<\/strong>:\u00a0for\u00a0<strong>rarely accessed data kept online for the long term<\/strong>. Metadata operations such as\u00a0<strong>Get Blob Properties<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Get Blob Metadata<\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong>Get Blob Tags<\/strong>\u00a0do\u00a0<strong>not<\/strong>\u00a0count as access and\u00a0<strong>do not influence tiering<\/strong>. All data\u00a0remains\u00a0on\u00a0<strong>online tiers<\/strong>\u00a0throughout the cycle, which preserves the standard availability, scale, and performance characteristics of Azure Blob Storage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Licensing smart tier<\/h2>\n<p>Smart tier requires\u00a0<strong>no separate SKU, add-on, or license purchase<\/strong>. It is a\u00a0<strong>native Azure Storage capability<\/strong>\u00a0activated through the storage account configuration and\u00a0<strong>billed on consumption<\/strong>\u00a0alongside your <strong>existing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schneider.im\/lu\/microsoft-azure-new-policy-on-unused-subscriptions-blocking-and-deletion\/\">Azure subscription<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The commercial model has four components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Capacity charges<\/strong>\u00a0apply at the\u00a0<strong>standard rate of the underlying tier<\/strong>\u00a0(hot, cool, or cold) where each object physically\u00a0resides. There is\u00a0<strong>no smart tier capacity meter<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/pricing\/details\/storage\/blobs\/#:~:text=found%20here.-,Smart%20Tier,-Smart%20tier%20automatically\"><strong>Monthly monitoring\u00a0fee<\/strong>\u00a0is\u00a0charged per object\u00a0<strong>larger than 128 KiB<\/strong>\u00a0managed by smart tier<\/a>. Objects of\u00a0<strong>128 KiB or smaller<\/strong>\u00a0stay in\u00a0hot and incur\u00a0<strong>no monitoring fee<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>No tier transition, early deletion, or data retrieval charges<\/strong>\u00a0apply within\u00a0smart\u00a0tier.
