On January 9, 2026, Microsoft confirmed that BizTalk Server 2020 is the final version of its long-standing integration product. Azure Logic Apps now serves as the strategic successor, delivering a cloud-native, scalable, and modernized integration platform for the next decade.
Organizations using BizTalk now have a clearly defined migration runway extending to April 2030. BizTalk Server 2020 remains available through standard Microsoft enterprise licensing programs, with existing support commitments unchanged.
Support Milestones
| Lifecycle Phase | End Date | What’s Included |
| Mainstream Support | April 11, 2028 | Security + non-security updates and Customer Service & Support (CSS) support |
| Extended Support | April 9, 2030 | CSS support, Security updates, and paid support for fixes* |
| End of Support | April 10, 2030 | No further updates or support |

What is BizTalk Server?
Microsoft BizTalk Server is Microsoft’s on-premises integration platform. It helps different systems talk to each other and automate business processes. Many companies have used BizTalk Server for more than 25 years for reliable, mission-critical workloads.
Key functions of BizTalk Server:
- Workflow and Orchestration: BizTalk Server can automate business processes by connecting different systems and managing the order in which tasks happen.
- Business-to-Business and Electronic Data Interchange (B2B/EDI) Integration: BizTalk Server supports industry standards like EDIFACT and AS2 so that companies can securely exchange data with partners.
- Enterprise Connectivity: BizTalk Server provides many adapters for systems such as SAP, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, and IBM products so that data can move between them easily.
- Hybrid Integration: BizTalk Server allows organizations to combine on-premises systems with cloud services.
Transition to Azure Logic Apps
Azure Logic Apps, which is part of Azure Integration Services (AIS), is the modern cloud-based successor to BizTalk Server. It offers cloud scalability, more than 1,400 connectors, AI-powered automation, and built-in DevOps features. It is designed to replace BizTalk Server over time.
Core components of Azure Logic Apps
- Workflow Automation: Azure Logic Apps lets users build workflows with low-code or no-code tools. These workflows can connect cloud services and on-premises systems.
- Business-to-Business and Electronic Data Interchange (B2B/EDI) Modernization: Logic Apps supports standards such as X12, EDIFACT, AS2, and healthcare formats, making it easy to modernize old B2B processes.
- Elastic Scaling: Logic Apps automatically scales based on workload and uses pay-per-execution pricing.
- Hybrid Deployments: Organizations can run Logic Apps on-premises or in isolated environments by using Azure Arc.
- Artificial Intelligence Integration: Logic Apps includes AI features for smarter workflows, such as predictive routing and intelligent automation.
Organizations can reuse many BizTalk Server elements such as maps, schemas, rules, and custom assemblies by using Microsoft migration tools. This reduces effort when moving from BizTalk Server to Azure Logic Apps.
By using Azure Logic Apps, companies get more flexibility, lower operating costs, and a modern integration platform for future needs.
Key Features of Azure Logic Apps
- Cloud-First Integration: Azure Logic Apps is fully managed by Microsoft. It handles updates, scaling, and infrastructure so that IT teams have less maintenance work.
- More Than 1,400 Connectors: Logic Apps provides connectors for enterprise systems, SaaS apps, legacy systems, mainframes, and many modern cloud services.
- Enterprise-Grade Security: It includes encryption, identity management, access control, compliance support, and private endpoints for secure communication.
- DevOps and Infrastructure-as-Code: It integrates with GitHub and Visual Studio Code and supports automated deployments through Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates and Bicep files.
- Hybrid and Mainframe Connectivity: Logic Apps provides connectors for IBM mainframe and midrange systems, and more are being added continuously.
Licensing and Plans
BizTalk Server is not available through the Cloud Solution Provider (CSP) program. It is only available through Microsoft volume licensing programs such as Enterprise Agreement or Enterprise Agreement Subscription (EA or EAS) and Microsoft Products and Services Agreement (MPSA).
Prerequisites for Azure Logic Apps
- Azure Subscription: You need an active Azure subscription to use Logic Apps.
- Pricing Models: Logic Apps can run on:
- Consumption-based pricing (pay per execution)
- Fixed App Service Plans (reserved capacity)
- B2B Capabilities: Advanced B2B/EDI features require Azure Integration Services add-ons.
Comparing Plans of Azure Logic Apps
| Plan | How It Works | Best For | Pros | Cons |
| Consumption Model | Pay per execution (each action and trigger). | Workloads that are unpredictable, have spikes, or change frequently. | – No upfront cost – Scales automatically |
– Costs can rise with high usage – Limited isolation and VNET integration |
| Standard/Dedicated Model | Runs on fixed capacity using App Service Plans or Dedicated Integration Service Environment (ISE). | Enterprise scenarios needing predictable costs, VNET integration, and isolation for compliance/security. | – Better performance for high-volume workflows – Network isolation |
– Higher fixed cost – Requires capacity planning |
| Integration Account (Optional) | Add-on for advanced B2B and EDI scenarios. | When exchanging messages with partners using standards like X12, EDIFACT, or complex transformations. | – Enables trading partner management – Supports maps, schemas, agreements |
– Additional cost – Only needed for B2B/EDI scenarios |
