Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 reached end of Mainstream Support on January 9, 2024. Normally, you wouldn’t expect any non-security updates to be released after that date. However, on February 13, 2024, Microsoft released the planned Cumulative Update (CU) CU14 and has one more CU (CU15) planned in 2024.
Mainstream Support Ending in 2024
It is essential to note that Microsoft concluded mainstream support for Exchange Server 2019 on January 9, 2024. Despite this, Microsoft has committed to releasing two cumulative updates, CU14 and CU15, following the end of mainstream support to address critical issues and provide ongoing support to users.
Delayed Release Timeline
In November 2023, Microsoft had announced to postpone the rollout of cumulative updates for Exchange Server 2019 until the year 2024. On February 13, 2024, Microsoft announced the availability of the 2024 H1 Cumulative Update (CU) for Exchange Server 2019 (aka CU14).
Revised Release Schedule
Under the new schedule, Microsoft plans to release two cumulative updates after the official end of support for Exchange Server 2019 on January 9, 2024. This adjustment ensures that commercial customers continue to receive necessary updates and support beyond the end-of-support date.
Features in CU14
The CU14 release for Exchange Server 2019 introduces several significant enhancements. CU14 includes fixes for customer reported issues, a security change, and all previously released Security Updates (SUs).
These features include
- Extended Protection enabled by default and
- various other fixes and improvements aimed at enhancing performance.
It was originally announced that CU14 would bring TLS 1.3 when running on Windows Server 2022. However, this is not the case and has been postponed to CU15. Microsoft’s developers are still testing and validating TLS 1.3 with Exchange Server and did not want to delay the release of CU14. Support for TLS 1.3 will be released in CU15 later this year.
