On December 17, 2013, Microsoft announced that they are discontinuing any future full version releases of Forefront UAG. Forefront UAG SKUs will be removed from price lists effective January 1st 2014.
Microsoft will continue to provide maintenance and support for Forefront UAG through the standard Microsoft support lifecycle. Customers will also be granted upgrade rights to Windows Server 2012 R2, which provides some remote access and secure web publishing capabilities that may be useful to customers who wish to transition from Forefront UAG.
Forefront UAG SA SKUs will be removed from price lists on Jan. 1, 2014, with all remaining SKUs removed on July 1, 2014. SKUs will remain in lead status and continue to be orderable.
Forefront UAG SPLA SKUs will remain on the SPLA price list until April 1, 2014.
Forefront UAG will continue to adhere to the published support lifecycle. Mainstream support is available through April 14, 2015 and extended support is available through April 14, 2020.
Existing customers with active Software Assurance on their Forefront UAG licenses as of Dec. 1, 2013 may add new UAG server instances, users, and devices without any requirement to order additional Forefront UAG licenses.
The Microsoft Product List will be updated on Jan. 1, 2014 to include upgrade rights from Forefront UAG to Windows Server 2012 R2. Customers will be able to use one license of Windows Server 2012 for each Forefront UAG server license they have purchased with Software Assurance. (External Connector licenses can be transitioned as well).
Specific Details for Open Programs:
Forefront UAG SKUs will be removed from the Open Programs price lists effective 1/1/2014. These SKUs will no longer be orderable on new orders effective 1/1/2014.
This communication provides correct Anniversary Orders instructions for both Open Value and Open Value Subscription customers who have active agreements with existing orders for Forefront UAG., as well as usage rights for current Open License customers.
Customers should continue to order the Forefront UAG SKUs on their anniversary orders for the duration of their current contracts. Customers continue to have current usage rights to the product and will not be required to purchase additional CALs, but can add additional users as needed at no charge.
Open Value Subscription
Customers can drop Forefront UAG SKUs from their anniversary orders effective 1/1/2014. OVS customers have perpetual rights to use the product regardless of where they are in their agreement term. Customers are free to continue to use the product and add additional users without purchasing additional CALs. No buyouts are required for customers with Forefront UAG – customers automatically have perpetual rights without exercising buyout option.
Open License L/SA or SA
Customers can add additional users at no charge, and will receive the grant to Windows Server (see details below.)
Open License – License only
Customer can add additional users at no charge – no need to purchase when adding additional users.
(Grant / license waiver language will be published in the January 2014 Product List.)
1. Windows Server 2012 Standard Grant. Each UAG Server license purchased under Open Value, with active SA as of 12/1/2013, will qualify a customer to receive a grant for one Windows Server 2012 Standard license (2 processors per license.) This will be a net-new license customer can use in addition to their UAG server license – unlike a traditional SA migration, where customers get new versions rights and have to use one or the other, but not both.
2. Free ongoing usage / no more true-ups required. Continue to use UAG and add new users at no additional cost. OV customers will not have to true-up additional users. They simply continue to order their existing quantity of the SKUs on their Anniversary orders for the remainder of their contract, but do not have to order CALs for additional users. OVS customers no long need to list the SKUs on their Anniversary orders effective 1/1/2014.
3. No buyouts required for OVS customers. Subscription customers are automatically granted perpetual usage rights without having to exercise the buyout option.

Open License customers without SA coverage can add additional users free of charge.
