Microsoft Interpreter in Teams: Licensing updates

Effective October 2, 2025, Microsoft has announced an immediate update to the licensing terms for the Interpreter feature in Microsoft Teams, following customer feedback.

Effective now, each user with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license is entitled to 20 hours of included Interpreter service per month (increased from 2 hours previously), with usage beyond that amount subject to available system capacity.

Microsoft acknowledged that an earlier communication about Interpreter caused frustration and uncertainty, and it has apologized for the confusion, emphasizing a commitment to clearer communication going forward.

These changes are already in effect, and no administrative action is required to benefit from them – however, organizations may wish to inform their Microsoft 365 Copilot users about the increased included hours and update any internal documentation accordingly.

What is Interpreter?

Interpreter is an AI-powered feature in Microsoft Teams (provided through Microsoft 365 Copilot) that delivers real-time, speech-to-speech translation during meetings. It enables live interpretation in up to nine languages so that each participant can speak in their native language and hear others in that language of choice.

The Interpreter agent can even simulate each speaker’s own voice in the translated speech, creating a more natural and inclusive experience for meeting attendees. This feature was introduced in 2025 as part of Microsoft’s effort to break language barriers in virtual meetings and is available to organizations licensed for Microsoft 365 Copilot.

Key Features

  • Real-Time Multilingual Translation: Provides instantaneous speech-to-speech interpretation for conversations in up to nine languages (including English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Mandarin Chinese, and Spanish). All participants can speak and listen in their preferred language without delay, making meetings seamless across language differences.
  • Personal Voice Simulation: Duplicates the speaker’s voice in the target language, so the translated audio sounds like the speaker themselves. This opt-in feature makes interpreted dialogue feel more personal and engaging. (Voice simulation only activates with the user’s consent and does not store any biometric data, ensuring privacy and fidelity.)
  • Seamless Teams Integration: Interpreter is built into Microsoft Teams meetings as an agent powered by Microsoft 365 Copilot. There are no separate apps or complex setups required – eligible users simply enable Interpreter during a meeting to access these translation capabilities. This integration means teams can communicate across languages using the familiar Teams environment, greatly enhancing inclusivity in global calls.

Licensing

As of the October 2025 update, Microsoft has adjusted how the Interpreter feature is licensed and allocated under Microsoft 365 Copilot:

  • Included Usage: Each Microsoft 365 Copilot licensed user now receives 20 hours per month of Interpreter service at no additional cost (this is an increase from the previous 2-hour per month limit). This generous allotment is intended to cover typical usage for most users.
  • Beyond 20 Hours: If a user’s Interpreter usage exceeds 20 hours in a month, the service may still be accessible subject to available capacity. In other words, additional interpretation time beyond the included 20 hours does not incur fees at this time, but is not guaranteed if system resources are constrained.
  • Usage Monitoring: To help organizations manage and plan their use of the Interpreter feature, Microsoft will provide usage monitoring tools for administrators by March 31, 2026. Admins will be able to track how much interpretation time is used, enabling better oversight and adoption planning once these tools are released.
  • No Immediate Charges (Future Considerations): Currently, there are no overage fees for using Interpreter beyond the included hours. Microsoft has stated that in the future it may introduce an option to purchase additional interpretation hours if needed, but this would come with clear advance notice. Importantly, if a paid add-on for extra hours is offered later, any past usage will not be charged retroactively. This means organizations won’t be billed for Interpreter usage that occurred before any new purchasing option is in place.
