Microsoft SQL Server 2025 available

On November 15, 2025, Microsoft announced the general availability of SQL Server 2025. This release introduces built-in artificial intelligence (AI), enhanced developer tools, and improvements in performance, security, and cloud integration.

What is SQL Server 2025?

SQL Server 2025 is Microsoft’s latest enterprise-grade relational database management system (RDBMS). It supports deployment across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments. The platform is designed to deliver a consistent experience with a focus on scalability, security, and AI integration.

Key Features

AI Built-In

  • AI is integrated directly into the SQL Server engine.
  • Supports semantic search, vector embedding, and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG).
  • Model management is available via T-SQL, with support for Azure OpenAI Service, OpenAI, and other frameworks.
  • Enables developers to build AI-powered applications without external tools.

Developer Enhancements

  • Native support for JSON, REST APIs, regular expressions (RegEx), and fuzzy string matching.
  • Change Event Streaming allows real-time data updates to Azure Event Hubs.
  • SQL Server Management Studio 22 (SSMS 22) includes AI assistance and ARM64 support.
  • A new high-performance Python driver (mssql-python) supports modern authentication.

Performance and Availability

  • Optimized locking reduces memory usage and improves concurrency.
  • Tempdb resource governance prevents excessive disk usage.
  • Optional Parameter Plan Optimization stabilizes query performance.
  • Enhancements to Always On availability groups improve failover speed and diagnostics.

Security

  • Microsoft Entra ID (formerly Azure Active Directory) managed identities enable secure, passwordless authentication.
  • Modern encryption and identity management practices enhance data protection.

Cloud and Hybrid Integration

  • Fabric Mirroring enables near real-time analytics with zero extract-transform-load (ETL).
  • Azure Arc integration provides unified management across environments.

Linux and Container Support

  • Expanded support for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 and Ubuntu 24.04.
  • TLS 1.3, signed container images, and tmpfs support for tempdb.
  • Visual Studio Code integration for container deployment.

Licensing

There are no significant changes to SQL Server 2025 licensing models. Customers can continue using existing licensing options.

Key updates include:

  • Standard Edition: Now supports up to 32 cores and 256 GB memory. Includes Resource Governor.
  • Developer Edition: A new Standard Developer Edition mirrors Standard Edition features for development and testing.
  • Express Edition: Supports up to 50 GB per database. Express Advanced features are now included by default.
  • Web Edition: Microsoft has announced SQL Server Web edition is being discontinued, starting with the 2025 release. This makes SQL Server 2022 the final version to include the Web edition, which will remain supported until January 2033. For cost-effective web applications, Microsoft recommend migrating to Azure SQL. It offers scalable solutions, flexible pricing, and elastic pools perfect for multi-tenant apps. If you’re planning to stay on-premises, the recommended path is to upgrade to the Standard edition.
