Effective November 2025, Microsoft introduced significant changes to Visual Studio 2026’s update channels. The new Insiders Channel replaces the long-standing Preview Channel and gives developers early access to upcoming features. The Stable Channel delivers validated, production-ready updates on a monthly schedule. Licensing

Notably, Visual Studio 2026 Professional is licensed per version, which means you will need to purchase a new license for each yearly version. In practical terms, if you are using Visual Studio 2026 Professional, you would need to acquire the 2027 edition when it releases to stay current, as the 2026 license won’t automatically cover the new 2027 version. Visual Studio Enterprise users with subscription licenses may receive the new versions as part of their subscription benefits, whereas Professional edition is a per-version purchase.
