On December 11, 2023, VMware by Broadcom, the result of the recent acquisition of VMware by Broadcom, announced a major overhaul of its product portfolio and licensing model. The company aims to provide customers with faster innovation, a simpler portfolio, and a robust ecosystem.

What is in the VMware by Broadcom product portfolio?

The new portfolio consists of two primary offers: VMware Cloud Foundation, a hybrid cloud solution for enterprise customers, and VMware vSphere Foundation, a workload platform for mid-sized to smaller customers. Both offers have optional advanced add-ons for storage, ransomware and disaster recovery, and application platform services.

How is VMware by Broadcom licensed?

The new licensing model is based on subscription licenses, with the end of sale of perpetual licenses and credits. Customers can also bring their own subscription licenses to VMware validated hybrid cloud endpoints running VMware Cloud Foundation.

The portfolio and licensing simplification is part of VMware by Broadcom’s journey to transition from a perpetual to a subscription model and to align with customer and partner feedback. The company claims that the new portfolio will reduce the previous subscription list price by half and add higher support service levels.
