Microsoft Windows Server 2025: Hotpatching for Azure Arc-Connected Servers available

On July 16, 2025, Microsoft announced the general availability of Hotpatching for Azure Arc–connected servers running Windows Server 2025. This release introduces a subscription-based model for non-Azure machines, enabling organizations to apply updates with minimal disruption.

This marks the first time Hotpatching is offered for non-Azure machines in a generally available form. The feature is delivered through a new subscription, allowing organizations to maintain security and uptime without relying on traditional patching methods that require reboots.

What is Hotpatching?

Hotpatching is a Windows Server update mechanism that allows patches to be applied without rebooting the system. It was previously available only for Azure virtual machines. With this release, Microsoft extends Hotpatching to on-premises and multi-cloud environments via Azure Arc.

This approach helps reduce downtime and improves operational efficiency by keeping systems patched and secure while avoiding service interruptions.

Key Features

Hotpatching for Azure Arc–connected servers includes:

  • Rebootless Patching: Most updates are applied without restarting the server.
  • Improved Uptime: Minimizes disruption to services during patching.
  • Consistent Management: Enables unified patching across hybrid environments using Azure Arc.
  • Security Maintenance: Keeps systems secure with regular updates.

This release supports Windows Server 2025 only. Earlier versions are not included in this general availability.
