Effective March 1, 2022, Microsoft Defender for Business is part of the Microsoft 365 Business Premium subscription. On May 2, 2022, Microsoft Defender for Business also became available as a standalone subscription.

Microsoft Defender for Business is a new endpoint security solution for small and mid-sized businesses (max. 300 users). This new endpoint security solution protects from ransomware, malware, phishing and other online threats.

All new Microsoft 365 Business Premium customers have Defender for Business immediately at their disposal. Existing customers will receive the new feature automatically in the upcoming weeks. You find the service in the Endpoint section of the Microsoft 365 Defender portal.

If you already have Microsoft 365 Business Basic or Standard, consider adding either upgrading to Microsoft 365 Business Premium or adding Microsoft Defender for Business to get more threat protection capabilities.

Defender for Business brings enterprise-grade capabilities of Defender for Endpoint to small and medium-sized businesses, but it does not have the same capabilities. Some features are optimized to meet the needs of small and midsized organizations, compared to the features for larger (enterprise) organizations. More specifically, Threat Analytics, Endpoint detection and response, and Automated investigation and response features are different to the same features in Defender for Endpoint Plan 2.

Microsoft Defender for Business also allows you to upgrade at the renewal of monthly and annual commitment offers or, alternatively, upgrade to Microsoft 365 Business Premium midterm – which includes Defender for Business capabilities.
