Microsoft 365 Copilot: Major Innovations in Wave 2

Coming end of May 2025, Microsoft introduces a greatly improved and expanded Microsoft 365 Copilot experience, called Microsoft 365 Copilot Wave 2. Furthermore, the new Copilot Control System lets you manage, govern, and measure Copilot and agents across your organization.

Microsoft 365 Copilot Wave 2: A New Copilot Experience

Accessible in Windows, the Microsoft 365 Copilot app helps you perform tasks, find information, and manage your work more efficiently. The new wave of innovations in this app, called Wave 2, brings a range of new features and an overall improved user experience:

Key Updates and Features

  • AI-powered Organization-wide Search: This new feature helps you find information faster at work by providing rich, context-aware answers from across your organization’s apps and data. It connects to both first- and third-party apps, including ServiceNow, Google Drive, Slack, Confluence, Jira, and more.
  • “Create” Experience – Brand-aligned image creation: Built for businesses, this feature uses OpenAI’s GPT-4o for AI-based image generation to help you easily modify or customize brand images, generate AI images aligned with your company’s approved brand guidelines, and create various types of content, from marketing copy and social assets to newsletter banners and videos from PowerPoint presentations.
  • Copilot Notebooks: This feature allows you to pull together a wide range of content, such as notes, documents, websites, and meeting recordings. It grounds Copilot on your notebook to provide the most relevant actions and insights, constantly updating in real-time as your content updates. Notebooks can even create a podcast-style audio overview of your content with two hosts walking you through the key points.
  • Agent Store: The new Agent Store makes it easier to find, pin, and use a range of agents. It offers prebuilt agents like the new Microsoft Researcher and Analyst agents, as well as agents from partners like Jira, Monday.com, Miro, and your company’s custom agents built in Copilot Studio.
  • Memory and Personalization: Copilot now learns how you work. It understands your needs and preferences through your chats, job profile, custom instructions, and more. Memory and personalization are private to you, and you can control what Copilot remembers, especially when working with sensitive information.
  • Copilot Key: Just hit the Copilot key and Win + C shortcut on Windows 11 PCs to access Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat.

New Microsoft-built Agents in Microsoft 365 Copilot

Researcher and Analyst agents

Coming end of May 2025, these are two reasoning agents for work powered by OpenAI’s deep reasoning o1-models. Researcher helps you tackle complex, multi-step research, delivering insights with greater quality and accuracy. Analyst thinks like a skilled data scientist, allowing you to go from raw data to insights in minutes.

Skill Discovery agent

People Skills infers individuals’ skillsets derived from user profile and activity mapped to a customizable built-in skill taxonomy. The People Skills data layer fuels the Skills agent, and enhances Copilot Chat, Microsoft 365, and Viva services with contextualized information about the people in your organization.

By the end of May 2025, the Skills Agent, also known as the Skills Discovery Agent, will be available. Powered by the People Skills data layer, this tool helps leaders form dynamic, skill-based teams for any project and allows employees to easily find and connect with colleagues who have the necessary skills. It also provides insights into the organization’s talent landscape, identifying strengths, gaps, and opportunities for strategic workforce planning.

Copilot Control System

Copilot Control System lets you manage, govern, and measure Copilot and the agents you create in Copilot Studio across your organization. New capabilities include:

  • Apps and Agents in Data Security Posture Management for AI with Purview: A single dashboard to view and govern AI apps and agents with full control over data classification, protection policies, and access.
  • Agent Management in the Microsoft 365 admin center: Enables the deployment of agents, including the ability to enable, disable, or block agents for specific users or groups.
  • Copilot Analytics: Measures the usage and business impact of your agents. The new Copilot Studio Agents Report, accessible in Microsoft Viva Insights, provides a comprehensive view of how agent-assisted actions contribute to productivity gains and ROI.
