Effective May 1, 2025, Microsoft introduces new Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) meters for Purview to help customers effectively secure and govern data in AI applications and agents. These meters are billed through an Azure Subscription. If you do not have an Azure Subscription linked to your tenant by June 30, 2025, these metered capabilities will stop working.
What is Microsoft Purview?
Microsoft Purview, formerly Azure Purview and Microsoft 365 Compliance, offers integrated data security, governance, and compliance solutions designed for the era of AI.
To help customers effectively secure and govern data in the era of AI, Microsoft Purview’s business model is evolving to align with the dynamic nature of data locations, flows, and access points. This evolution introduces a combination of
- entitlement options: licensed per-user-per-month (PUPM), e.g., licensed via Microsoft 365 E5 (No Teams) / E5 Compliance;
- consumptive options (new): pay-as-you-go (PAYG).
Consumptive options – Pay-as-you-go Licensing
Data needs protection as it moves through networks, DataOps, pipelines, application architectures, and especially AI models and agents. Beyond protection, you need AI-based visibility, alerts, and actions. These scenarios are more compute-dependent, allowing you to pay only for what you use based on your data’s volume or complexity.
This is why, starting May 1, 2025, Purview introduces new Pay-As-You-Go (PAYG) meters optimized for data moving across networks and through GenAI applications. These new meters complement the existing PAYG meters for Purview Data Governance and Data Security, which were activated on January 6, 2025.
The new Purview meters are as follows:
Category | SKU | PAYG Model |
Data Security | In Transit Protection | 10K requests |
Insider Risk Management | 10K events
Data Compliance | Audit Standard* | 1M Audit records ingested |
Data Lifecycle Management Premium | 1M text messages / month
eDiscovery Premium | GBs stored / month
Communication Compliance Standard | 1M text records
Communication Compliance Premium | 1M text records |
*Audit Standard are billed under the PAYG model for third-party AI applications, like ChatGPT Enterprise. All Microsoft first-party applications such as Microsoft 365 applications, Fabric, and Microsoft first-party AI apps like Microsoft 365 Copilot, Security Copilot, or AI applications custom-built using Copilot Studio are inclusive of Audit Standard. Audit Standard will retain audit records for 180 days.
Scenarios using Pay-as-you-go: Applicable AI App Use Cases
Customers using Purview in the following scenarios will activate one or more of the new meters and will accrue charges on the Azure subscription linked to their Microsoft 365 tenant. If you do not have a linked Azure subscription by June 30, 2025, these metered capabilities will stop working:
What should I do now?
