Microsoft GitHub usage-based billing

On August 1, 2024, Microsoft announced the GitHub metered billing for GitHub services such as GitHub Enterprise Cloud (GHE) and GitHub Advanced Security (GHAS) offering customers a consistent and unified billing experience, added flexibility to scale and provision resources on-demand.

What does GitHub usage-based billing mean?

Billing is now on a usage basis – if a user starts consuming a license seat during a month, then customers pay on a prorated basis for that month with no commitment for future months. Enterprise Agreement (EA) customers who have been able to purchase regular User Subscription Licenses for these services can continue to do so if they want to.

What is GitHub?

GitHub is a cloud-based platform that helps developers store, manage, and share their code. It uses Git, an open-source version control system, to track changes in code and facilitate collaboration among developers. GitHub’s user-friendly interface makes it accessible even to those who are new to coding.

GitHub Enterprise Cloud (GHE)

GitHub Enterprise Cloud (GHE) is a cloud-based version of GitHub designed for large businesses and teams. It offers advanced features and management options, including:

  • Enterprise Account Management: Centralized control over multiple GitHub organizations.
  • Enhanced Security: Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) authentication, managed user accounts, and repository rulesets.
  • Additional Resources: Extra GitHub Actions minutes and privately published GitHub Pages sites.
  • Compliance: Access to GitHub’s compliance reports and the ability to restrict email notifications to verified domains

GitHub Advanced Security (GHAS)

GitHub Advanced Security (GHAS) is a suite of advanced security tools integrated directly into GitHub, designed to help developers identify and fix security vulnerabilities in their code. GHAS is available for enterprise accounts on GitHub Enterprise Cloud and GitHub Enterprise Server, and some features are also available for public repositories on GitHub.com.

Key Features of GHAS

  • Code Scanning: Uses CodeQL and other tools to detect potential security vulnerabilities and coding errors in your code.
  • Secret Scanning: Identifies secrets, such as API keys and tokens, that may have been accidentally committed to your repositories.
  • Dependency Review: Provides information about security vulnerabilities in your project’s dependencies.
  • Security Overview: Offers a comprehensive view of your organization’s security status, including open vulnerabilities and security alerts.

These tools help ensure that your code is secure and compliant with industry standards, making it easier to maintain high security standards across your projects.
