Microsoft Azure Cobalt 100-based Virtual Machines available

On October 16, 2024, Microsoft announced the general availability of Azure Cobalt 100-based Virtual Machines (VMs). These VMs are powered by Microsoft’s custom-designed Cobalt 100 ARM processors, offering significant improvements in performance and efficiency. Azure Cobalt 100-based VMs are available in multiple regions, including Canada Central, Central US, East US, Germany West Central, Japan East, and more. Additional regions will be added throughout 2024.

 

What are Azure Cobalt 100-Based Virtual Machines?

Azure Cobalt 100-based VMs are virtual machines that run on Microsoft’s custom 64-bit ARM-based Cobalt 100 CPU. These VMs are designed to optimize performance, power efficiency, and scalability for various workloads.

 

Key Features

  • Performance: Up to 1.4x CPU performance, 1.5x performance on Java-based workloads, and 2x performance on web servers and .NET applications compared to previous generations.
  • Storage and Network: 4x local storage IOPS with NVMe and up to 1.5x network bandwidth.
  • VM Series:
    • Dpsv6-series: General purpose.
    • Dplsv6-series: General purpose.
    • Epsv6-series: Memory-optimized.
  • Price Performance: Up to 50% better price performance than previous Arm-based VMs.

 

Licensing

Azure Cobalt 100-based VMs are available through standard Azure subscription models. Pricing varies based on the VM series and region. Customers can deploy these VMs using the Azure portal, SDKs, APIs, PowerShell, and CLI.
