Oracle Cloud Infrastructure: Red Hat OpenShift integration

Oracle Gold Partner

As of May 6, 2024, Red Hat OpenShift is available on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Compute Virtual Machines (VMs).

What is supported of Red Hat OpenShift on OCI?

Red Hat OpenShift on OCI is supported for customer-managed installations using validated configurations of Red Hat OpenShift Platform Plus, Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, and Red Hat OpenShift Kubernetes Engine.

What is Red Hat OpenShift?

Red Hat OpenShift is a powerful hybrid cloud application platform that allows you to develop, modernize, deploy, run and manage applications. It provides a consistent experience, whether on a public cloud, on-premises, hybrid cloud, or edge architecture. Hybrid cloud here means that you can use Red Hat Open Shift in clouds of other major cloud providers, such as Oracle.

It leverages Kubernetes for container orchestration, making it ideal for modern application development.

What is Oracle Cloud Infrastructure?

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is a comprehensive cloud service that provides high-performance, secure, and scalable solutions for applications and data. Whether you need to migrate, build, or run workloads in the cloud, OCI offers the right tools and resources. It includes Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), Software as a Service (SaaS), and Data as a Service (DaaS). OCI’s features span multi-cloud capabilities, public cloud services, hybrid cloud solutions, and dedicated cloud regions, making it a versatile choice for organizations worldwide.

The Oracle x Red Hat collaboration

Oracle and Red Hat have been successfully collaborating for years now. They worked together by bringing Red Hat Enterprise Linux for OCI and introduced Oracle VMware Cloud Solution workloads.

Now, that both Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift are integrated with Oracle, customers can have peace of mind when bringing their Red Hat OpenShift workloads to OCI.

How do I bring Red Hat OpenShift workloads to OCI?

You can now extend your Red Hat OpenShift ecosystem to include installations on OCI by using the Red Hat portal. Ensure first that the OCI Compute shape is certified.

Installation Options:

  • Red Hat OpenShift Assisted Installer: This method simplifies installation by guiding users through the process step-by-step. It ensures a consistent and reliable setup and is available via https://console.redhat.com. Find more on info how to use the OpenShift Assisted Installer here.
  • Command Line Installation: For more advanced users, the command line provides flexibility and fine-grained control. You can customize parameters and scripts to match your specific requirements.
  • Agent-Based Installation: Agent-based installer is used to deploy fully disconnected OpenShift clusters. This approach allows installation in air-gapped environments (where the system lacks direct internet access). Agents facilitate communication between components, even without external connectivity. Find out how the agent-based installation works here.

Storage Integration:

  • Oracle’s Container Storage Interface (CSI): With Oracle’s CSI software, you can seamlessly integrate OCI storage with Red Hat OpenShift. The Container Storage Interface (CSI) standard enables storage providers to develop plugins that allow Kubernetes clusters to access block and file storage systems. You can manage storage volumes directly from the OpenShift platform.

API Interoperation:

  • Cloud Control Manager (CCM): The CCM software bridges OCI and Red Hat OpenShift. It facilitates communication between the two platforms via Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). This interoperation ensures smooth coordination and management of resources.
