Microsoft Visio 2016 and Visio 2019 end of support: upgrade recommended

Effective October 14, 2025, support for Microsoft Visio 2016 and Visio 2019 ends. After that date, these versions will no longer receive updates, security patches, or technical assistance. Although the applications may still operate, using unsupported software can pose security risks and other issues. Given that migrations can be time-consuming, we suggest beginning the upgrade process for any devices still running Visio 2016 or Visio 2019 as soon as possible.

What does end of support mean?

Microsoft Visio, like most Microsoft products, follows a support lifecycle during which bug fixes and security updates are provided. This lifecycle spans several years from the product’s initial release. The conclusion of this lifecycle is termed as the product’s end of support. Once Visio reaches this stage, Microsoft will no longer offer:

  • Technical support for any issues
  • Bug fixes for newly discovered problems
  • Security updates for newly identified vulnerabilities

Due to these changes, we highly recommend upgrading to a supported version of Visio promptly.

Recommended path: Upgrade to Visio Plan 2

To avoid these risks and ensure your organization remains secure and compliant, we advise upgrading devices running Visio 2016 or Visio 2019 to Visio Plan 2. This plan includes both web and desktop apps, ensuring access to the latest features and updates.

Visio Plan 2 provides:

  • Always up-to-date versions of Visio for both web and desktop
  • Capability to create, view, edit, and collaborate on Visio files directly within Microsoft Teams
  • Advanced features such as Export to Power Automate, Visio Visuals for Power BI, Export to Word, Data Visualizer for Excel, and Slide Snippets for PowerPoint

Alternative options: Upgrade to Microsoft 365 or Visio 2024

For basic viewing and editing, you can upgrade to a commercial Microsoft 365 plan to get Visio in Microsoft 365. This allows users to create, view, edit, and share diagrams via Visio for the web or the Visio app in Teams.

For scenarios requiring a fully disconnected solution, we recommend upgrading to Visio Standard 2024 or Visio Professional 2024. These versions are available as a one-time purchase and include updated shapes, stencils, templates, and a modern user interface.
