Microsoft Windows 10 Extended Security Updates

Effective October 14, 2025, Microsoft Windows 10 reaches end of support. For organizations that must continue using Windows 10 after this date, Microsoft offers the paid Extended Security Update (ESU) program. Customers running Windows 10 in Azure Virtual Desktop will be entitled to free ESUs.

What are Extended Security Updates (ESUs)?

ESUs allow organizations to receive critical and/or important security updates for Windows 10 PCs when they need extra time to transition to Windows 11. They are intended to be a temporary bridge, not a long-term solution. ESUs do not include new features, non-security fixes, or design change requests.

Why Upgrade to Windows 11?

While Windows 10 PCs will continue to function after end of support, they will no longer receive security updates, bug fixes, feature improvements, or security issue resolutions. Upgrading to Windows 11 or transitioning to a new Windows 11 PC will help deliver a secure computing experience and protect your organization.

Options to stay on a supported version of Windows

With Windows 10 end of support nearing, organizations have three options:

  1. Upgrade existing eligible PCs that meet Windows 11 hardware requirements.
  2. Purchase new Windows 11 PCs. They offer powerful security features turned on by default, numerous accessibility, productivity, and AI enhancements, and are built for hybrid work.
  3. Migrate to the cloud and subscribe to Windows 365. Make Windows 11 available to users on any device with a Cloud PC.

ESUs are available at no additional cost to those Windows 10 PCs that are used to access a Windows 365 Cloud PC running Windows 11.

Conclusion

The ESU program is a valuable tool for organizations that need more time to transition to Windows 11. However, it’s important to remember that it’s a temporary solution and organizations should aim to upgrade to Windows 11 as soon as possible for the best, most secure computing experience.
